MUSIC & MEMORY

Designed to improve the lives of residents in skilled nursing facilities who suffer from Alzheimer's and other cognitive disorders, the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF) Music & Memory Project delivered personalized music to 4,500 skilled nursing residents in 300 participating facilities during a three year period.

Researchers from the University of California Davis, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, studied and documented the impact of using music to reduce the use of antipsychotic medication in people with dementia.
The project incorporated the nationally known Music & Memoryâ„ program which brings individualized music to residents in long term care homes via iPods and other devices. Since 2008, the program has been successfully implemented in thousands of long-term care facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
The $1.4 million California program was funded from nursing home fines which are collected by the California Department of Public Health Licensing and Certification Division and deposited in a federal Civil Monetary Penalty fund.
The program ended in July, 2018.
